Difficile de trouver la véritable origine géographique de ce nom, dont on trouve des traces à la fois dans la Meurthe-et-Moselle, l'Isère, la Corrèze ou les départements d'outre-mer (variante : Bellony). Le sens risque d'être très différent selon les régions. Concernant la Corrèze, il s'agit d'une variante de Bélonie, Bellonie, nom de divers hameaux (= le domaine de Belon, Bellon, noms de personnes dérivés de Bel, qui lui-même signifie "beau"). On pensera aussi, dans d'autres cas, à une variante du nom italien Belloni (dérivé de "bello" = beau), lui aussi nom de personne. Seule la généalogie permettrait d'en savoir plus.
